Carlsbad Aquafarm

Carlsbad Aquafarm is Southern California’s only oyster farm. Our business model and our brand are based on responsibly growing oysters with a commitment to coastal conservation.

Shellfish aquaculture in the City of Carlsbad‘s Agua Hedionda Lagoon began as a California Sea Grant research project by San Diego State University in the 1960’s. Their research determined which shellfish species were best suited to grow in the lagoon, which, at the time had been reconnected with the Pacific Ocean. Their research concluded the lagoon was ideal for growing shellfish and that the lagoon’s long-term health would benefit from the biofiltration eco-services provided by millions of shellfish. Soon thereafter the scientists joined forces with shellfish farmers to establish the Carlsbad Aquafarm and start growing shellfish.

TwoXSea

TwoXSea Sustainability Criteria

Sustainable is a word that, as of late, has been misused to suit the needs of some just trying to increase profits. TwoXSea was founded on honesty, transparency, and the following six sustainability criteria:

  1. The harvesting of all fish we sell has left more than enough fish for future generations, and caused no habitat destruction – none.
  2. There is no loss of marine life through incidental catch, “Bycatch”, in the harvesting process.
  3. Farming products we sell did not involve: use of chemicals or medicines, adverse use of feed from wild sources, introduction of non-native species into local fisheries, or inflict economic adversity on families and communities.
  4. The person who caught the fish was paid fairly for the work they did to bring it to you.
  5. The fish can be traced back to the vessel that caught the fish, and proper guarantees are in place regarding the honest origin of the fish.
  6. The fish comes from as local an area as possible, thus reducing carbon emissions and restoring regional cuisine.

TwoXSea is working towards a better, renewable future that ensures seafood for generations to come. We welcome your questions, insights and opinions – we can’t do this alone!

Little Cranberry Lobster

Little Cranberry Lobster is a product of the Cranberry Isles Fishermen’s Co-Op.  Through generations of experience we have learned to fish in balance with the sea. We take our stewardship of the ocean seriously. We have participated in establishing trap limits, size limits and most importantly, protecting egg-bearing females. These measures ensure a harvest for generations to come. Today, every lobster we catch is MSC certified, sustainable and traceable. We are proud custodians of a great tradition providing a fresh product, caught right and delivered to you.

Earlier this year, the Cranberry Isles Fisherman’s Co-Op voted unanimously to install solar panels to provide power to our business. By going solar we will be able to produce 110% of our needs, which will reduce our carbon footprint by 22,073 pounds of CO2 per year.

Hama Hama Oysters

The Hama Hama Farm is a watershed, our schedules are set by the gravitational pull of the sun and moon. On the beach, we harvest at low tide and bring product to shore at high tide. Above the tideline we produce and nurse oyster seed, wash oysters and clams to sell, and shuck oyster clusters. We don’t feed, fertilize, or doctor anything, and the animals actively clean their environment as they grow. Our farm is an ecosystem, and from forest to flats, from salt water to fresh, from low tide to high, it’s always in transition.

Our shared mission is to manage our resources for current and future generations. Nearly 30 people work for Hama Hama, many of them for several decades or longer. We’re united by kinship, history, work, and place… and by the love of these darned good oysters. Check out the videos below to learn more about us, our farm, and this place we call home.
