Dr Jo Fava is an everyday hero here in the Florida Keys for our community both on land and at sea! She is a marine mammal veterinarian who manages the rescue and rehabilitation of all marine mammals across 10,000 square miles of ocean from Key West, Florida to Miami, Florida. In the event that a dolphin, whale or other marine mammal species is reported to be in danger or struggling, Dr Jo coordinates the rescue. Her team at Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Responder (DPMMR.org) are the only government licensed, non-profit, rescue or organization across the Florida Keys. The team is called-in to assess the situation and works with the local network of responders to work out a rescue, rehabilitation and hopeful release plan. Dr Jo and her team currently do not have a local rehab facility in the area and are therefore forced to drive any animal deemed healthy enough for rehab but not immediate release, to Orlando over 5 hours away. This stressful event weighs heavily on the animal and the team’s rescue efforts. DPMMR is working to build a marine mammal rescue facility and teaching hospital in Key Largo which will facilitate the conservation of these species in this region and support marine education for the local community and visitors from around the world.
